A GSM gateway without a PC needs only a phone, a SIM and a network connection. With GSMCalls Smart Bridge, a compact microcontroller plugs into the phone’s USB-C and the GSMCalls app streams digital wideband G.722 audio straight to the cloud platform, which delivers the call to your SIP trunk. No gateway computer, no audio cables.
Why teams choose GSMCalls as their GSM gateway without a PC
No gateway PC, mini PC or USB hub at the site
Digital wideband HD audio with G.722 end to end where supported
App-to-cloud over Wi-Fi or mobile data
Power pass-through on the USB-C bridge keeps the phone charging
Remote status, pairing and updates from the portal
Ideal for small branches, kiosks and remote sites
Why remove the PC from a GSM gateway?
Traditional phone-based gateways hang every handset off a local computer. That PC is the single point of failure: a Windows update, a full disk or a power cut takes every line down, and someone has to travel to fix it. It also needs a desk, a UPS and remote-access tools.
Smart Bridge moves the gateway logic into the phone app and the cloud. Each phone is self-contained, so one failure affects one line — and a replacement is a phone plus a bridge, paired from the portal.
How Smart Bridge carries HD voice
The Smart Bridge microcontroller connects to the phone’s USB-C port and handles the audio interface in the digital domain. The GSMCalls app encodes the call as G.722, the ITU-T wideband codec that samples at 16 kHz and carries speech from roughly 50 Hz to 7 kHz at 64 kbit/s. Narrowband G.711 stops at 3.4 kHz, which is why wideband sounds noticeably clearer.
The app sends that stream to GSMCalls over Wi-Fi or mobile data. The cloud platform hands the call to your SIP trunk and keeps G.722 toward your PBX where your phones support it, or transcodes to G.711 A-law or μ-law where they do not. The mobile side is still limited by the network: HD voice on the GSM leg depends on VoLTE or VoWiFi and the operator.
What you need on site
The bill of materials for a GSM gateway without a PC is short:
A charger — the bridge passes power through to the phone
Wi-Fi or mobile data for the app-to-cloud link
Network, security and reliability
Because the phone connects outward to the cloud, you do not open inbound ports at the site or deal with NAT traversal for each line. Between GSMCalls and your PBX, trunks can use UDP, TCP or TLS with ACLs, and failover to a standby trunk. For the reasoning behind encrypting signalling and media, see SIP security with TLS and SRTP.
The portal shows each phone’s connectivity, signal, battery and call state. Alerts fire when a device drops offline or a minute profile nears its limit, so a remote site does not need local IT.
Where a PC-free gateway fits
Smart Bridge suits branches that need a few mobile lines, temporary sites, retail counters and anywhere space or IT support is limited. Larger racks can still use USB Connect, and Bluetooth installs use Wireless Connect — all managed in the same portal. Every deployment must be lawful and authorised under your carrier’s terms and our acceptable use policy.
Step by step
Set up your GSM gateway without a PC
1
Step 1: Fit the bridge
Plug the Smart Bridge into the phone’s USB-C port and connect the charger to the bridge.
2
Step 2: Install the app
Install the GSMCalls app, join Wi-Fi or enable mobile data, and pair with a code from the portal.
3
Step 3: Route calls
Assign the phone to a SIP trunk and routing group; choose G.722 or G.711 toward your PBX.
4
Step 4: Verify HD audio
Place test calls and confirm codec, call status and the CDR in the portal.

FAQ
GSM gateway without a PC questions
Still unsure? Talk to an engineer — we'll map your site to the right architecture.
Yes. With Smart Bridge the GSMCalls app on the phone streams the call to the cloud, and the cloud delivers it to your SIP trunk. There is no local computer.
Is the audio really HD?
+−
The app-to-cloud leg uses G.722 wideband at 16 kHz. The mobile leg is HD only when the network call uses VoLTE or VoWiFi with a wideband codec.
What internet connection does the phone need?
+−
Wi-Fi or mobile data. A stable connection with low jitter gives the best results; the portal shows each phone’s connectivity.
Does my PBX need to support G.722?
+−
No. GSMCalls can keep G.722 toward PBXs and phones that support it, or deliver G.711 A-law or μ-law to those that do not.
GSMCalls is built for lawful, authorised deployments. You remain responsible for local telecommunications regulations and your carriers’ terms — see the acceptable use policy.
